University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener Program

The gardens at the Prairie House were selected as a project site of the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener Program in September 2002. Master Gardeners Jennifer Balanoff (right) and Loretta Wolak (center) are pictured above with Charlotte Kelly (left), Volunteer Organizer for the Master Gardener program.

University of Illinois Extension is the outreach arm of the Champaign-Urbana campus. It provides non-credit education to the people of Illinois.

A Master Gardener is a volunteer, trained by Extension educators, who provides service to the community. Master Gardeners can provide unbiased, research-based information from the University to the public. The Master Gardener program is unique, in that once participants are trained, they return a minimum of 60 hours of volunteer time in various community service projects.

Jennie Balanoff of the Master Gardener's designed and helped select plants introduced to the garden quadrants at the Prairie House, which resist deer browsing and also offer a colorful display throughout the growning season. The gardens are an attraction for people who want to combine native plants with traditional perennials and annuals.
