Whole Foods Market Volunteers at Wolf Road Prairie
June 18, 2004
As an incentive we have developed a program where we pay Team Members to work in the community! Team Members do volunteer work for non-profit organizations and receive their regular wages for their donated time. Team Members are awarded 20 Community Service hours to use for every 2000 regular hours worked.
From the Community Giving section of the Whole Foods Market web site
A work day was organized by Dave Bergeron for fifteen employees from Whole Foods Market stores in River Forest and Willowbrook . Wolf Road Prairie was chosen for this work day because it is located mid-way between both stores.
One of the core values of Whole Foods Market is to take part in the environment and the community. Volunteers spent four hours at Wolf Road Prairie cutting grey dogwood and European buckthorn resprouts in sections of the preserve that were not burned this spring.
Under the supervison of Tim Burke, STPS board member, Whole Foods Market volunteers cut many thousands of invasive sprouts to the ground. This enables prairie plants to win out over invasive species in the competition for light and space.
Volunteers spread out across the prairie to minimize trampling and damage to native plants.
A highlight of the afternoon was the sighting of a yellow headed blackbird by two volunteers. This is the first sighting of a yellow headed blackbird known at Wolf Road Prairie.
They plan to return in September to collect seed.
