White wild indigo
(Baptisia leucantha)
A member of the legume family, the showy
blossoms of white wild indigo signal the beginning of summer at the prairie.
Found blooming with prairie associates, white wild indigo once thrived in wide
areas of distribution. Today, a healthy population still exists at Wolf Road Prairie, adding
diversity to the landscape with showy flowering spikes of pea-like blossoms
towering over dark green leaves.

After blossoming, large oval seed pods
form which are almost pecan size in shape. These pods are often attacked by
weevils.
