Virginia rail
(Rallus limicola)

A common but elusive bird, the Virginia rail moves silently through the grasses and seldom resorts to flight. Medium to dark brown with an orange bill, it is best identified by its metallic two-syllable note of "kid-ick, kid-ick." It builds nests on the ground in the dense cover of marshes.
