(17) The Changing Prairie
Proceeding south at the next intersection you will come to an area dominated by little bluestem, one of the shorter prairie grasses. Wild quinine, goldenrods, and deep blue prairie gentians can be seen here too. Continuing south, seek out big bluestem, the Illinois state prairie grass. Over 6 feet tall with its "turkeyfoot" seed heads, it and Indian grass were the predominant grasses of the Prairie State. |
