(2) Mesic Prairie

As you leave the savanna you enter the moderately moist (mesic) prairie with its impressive array of forbs flowering from May to October. Look for deeply-lobed compass plant leaves with edges pointing north and south and notice large heart-shaped or "elephant ear" leaves of prairie dock. Stiff, rough leaves enable these plants to withstand seasonal drought. Their mid-summer yellow flowers tower on eight foot stems.
