(15) Volunteers Care for the Prairie
drawing by Susan Van Horn
Volunteers spend many hours at Wolf Road Prairie cutting brush,
removing weeds, collecting seeds and scattering them into restoration areas.
In the past, volunteers assisted with prescribed burns. Today prescribed burns are conducted by professionals. Fire is crucial to the prairie and is introduced regularly through prescribed burns. In addition to controlling trees, shrubs and non-native plants, fire removes the previous year's dried vegetation,
and recycles minerals into the soil.
Darker soil absorbs sunlight and warms earlier in the spring. The prairie improves dramatically
in quality each year due to these management practices.
