Pre-settlement open grown bur oaks are found in habitat remnants characteristic of “oak openings.” Identified by rugged, corky bark, large deep green leaves and large fringed acorns, the species is resistant to fire. Bur oak can also be found in prairies and in woodlands that are not too dense.
