Goldenrods
(Solidago)
Goldenrods are among the first
native species to re-inhabit cleared or degraded land. Early blooming goldenrods flower
in July. Other goldenrods flower throughout the summer. Late bloomers can be seen until the first October frost.

Stiff goldenrod (Solidago rigida) is distinctive because of its
extremely stiff leaves and stems. Its large flowers bloom in clusters from July through October.

Goldenrods are included in one of
the largest plant families on the prairie -- the aster family.
Over twenty species are found at Wolf Road Prairie. In this photo,
a milkweed seed is resting among goldenrod buds.

The variety in shape, texture and form among
goldenrods is surprising. In summer, the nectar in these golden bouquets attracts honey bees, butterflies and
other pollinating insects.
