Prairie dock (Silphium terebinthinaceum) The huge somewhat heart-shaped leaves appear at the base of the plant and can reach two feet in length. Flowering stalks of rich yellow blossoms can reach heights of six feet. Deep-rooted, dock can survive habitat degradation and is considered one of the hardiest prairie species. photo by Todd Bannor
